Motherhood, 2015-2016 Series of drawings, Indian ink and wash on paper, 50 x 60 cm An ancestral and universal theme if ever there was one, the pictorial and sculptural representation of motherhood has long been the domain of men. From goddesses of fertility in ancient and African statuary to paintings of the Virgin and Child... there is no shortage of representations of pregnant women, nursing mothers, or mothers in ancient, classical, and modern art history. It is rarer to see mothers who are artists address this theme, which is nevertheless essential in a woman's life. Paradoxically, when treated by a female artist, motherhood remains a taboo or devalued subject. An intimate experience if ever there was one, the question of motherhood is still a hot topic, an important political issue, both in terms of the status of women and medically assisted reproduction... I experienced my pregnancy as an artist's residency in my own body. Procreation and creation were intimately intertwined. Far from distancing me from my previous artistic approach, this birth revealed the essence of all my previous work. The desire for motherhood, previously unconscious and sublimated, is now revealed and embraced. Yet the issue of motherhood was already clearly inscribed in all its meanings: eroticism, origin of the world, womb, fertilization, reproduction, metamorphosed body.
